What Does Rose Mean?

The name Rose is derived from the Latin rosa, which refers to the woody perennial flowering plant of the genus Rosa. There is also evidence to suggest that Rose was a Norman variation of the Germanic name Hrodohaidis, which is composed of the word hrod meaning “fame” and heid meaning "type." It was introduced to England by the Normans in the Middle Ages and translated into Old English as Roese and Rohese.

Origin: The name Rose refers to the flower, rose. It can also be traced back to Old English meaning "famous type."

Gender: Rose is most frequently used as a girl name, though it can also be a surname.

Pronunciation: rOHz

How Popular is the Name Rose?

The name Rose was well-liked at the turn of the century, holding the No. 18 spot in 1900 for the most popular girl name in the United States. However, it dropped out of the Top 20 by 1921. It continued to decline in popularity; and in 1961, it fell out of the Top 100 girl names. By 1997, it had plunged to its lowest ranking of No. 392.

The cheerful name then suddenly jumped almost 100 spots to No. 297 that very next year in 1998. This was likely due to the massive popularity of the epic film "Titanic," which came out in 1997. The movie starred Leonardo DiCaprio as Jack, and Kate Winslet as his love interest, Rose.

Rose then enjoyed another year of increased popularity before slowly losing its luster again. It has since done a turnaround and is back on the upswing. It broke into the list of Top 200 girl names in 2014 and was ranked No. 115 in 2019.
