What Does the Name Paisley Mean?

The name Paisley comes from the name of a town in Scotland, located close to Glasgow. People from the town of Paisley used it as their surname. It wasn't until much later that Paisley was used as a first name.

The word Paisley is likely derived from the Latin word basilica, which means church. In ancient Rome, a basilica was a large rectangular-shaped building used for a variety of purposes, including legal and business matters. Later, other buildings with the same architectural style were called basilicas.

As Christianity grew, churches were often built this way, and the word came to refer to a church. This gave way to the Irish word baslec, meaning church, ultimately developing into paisley.

Paisley is also the name of a fabric pattern that uses teardrop shapes. The teardrop or almond shape design feature is of Persian origin, but it was in Kashmir, India that these shapes were replicated into intricate designs on fabric. Paisley shawls were imported from India to Europe in the early 1800s, where the pattern became popular.

Although the pattern originated in Iran and India, it was later produced in large amounts in the town of Paisley.
