With their ability to send messages on the go, radio transmitters and receivers are both fun and functional, making them a favorite of children and adults alike.

The Little Pretender Walkie Talkies are just one option that claims to help kids have crystal-clear conversations, whether across the yard, the playground, or elsewhere up to two miles. Since many parents worry about crossing signals with other walkie-talkies, this set contains only three channels, which are less likely to be interrupted (roger that!). Design: Perfect for small hands

The size of these walkie-talkies is ideal. Unlike others on the market, they have a small, slender design that fit perfectly in our 6-year-old son’s hands. He was also able to easily push the talk button on the side and understand the four controls on the front panel, which allowed him to power the device on and off, turn on the built-in flashlight, call, and change channels. Because the units only have three channel selections, there’s less frustration over lost signals—and a lower risk of your little one tuning in to the chatter of strangers.

The plastic, break-resistant toy takes three AAA batteries, which are not included. A plastic belt clip allows kids to carry the transmitters around while retaining use of their hands, although we think a metal clip might have been sturdier choice. If your kiddos have their hearts set on a shade beyond blue, you’ll have to look elsewhere: This Little Pretender model comes in only one color.

In a toy category saturated with selections, the Little Pretender Walkie Talkies stand out. While other options experienced interrupted or dropped signals, which are not only frustrating but also dangerous, Little Pretender’s product got the message across loud and clear. Our only complaint is the lack of variety in color and the inability to adjust the volume (opt for UOKOO Walkie Talkies or Retevis RT-388 Walkie Talkies if either points are important to you). Overall, this product was the easiest to set up and performed best in terms of sound.
