Finding a Baby Food Maker That Is Right for You

Food processors for making baby food

Making your own baby food is a simple, money-saving task that can result in a happy and healthy well-fed baby. Though you don't need complex tools to make your baby food, there are several food processors that have been billed specifically for baby food. A baby food maker generally is an all-in-one appliance that both steams and purées your baby's meals. Some even feature additional functions. Here are 5 models you might consider.

Beaba Baby Food Maker

The Beaba Baby Food Maker is an all-in-one unit that cooks, purées, defrosts and heats your homemade baby food. The French company focuses on making baby products that are compact, multi-functional, and practical. The Beaba BabyCook certainly is all of that. Retailing at about $150, the unit is one of the higher-priced models. While you will find some cheaper models, the Beaba Baby Food maker seems to get the best reviews. The Beaba Baby Cook has a 2 1/2 cup capacity.

FAO Schwarz Baby Food Processor/Baby Chef Ultimate Baby Food Maker

This particular baby food maker can be found under two product lines- the FAO Schwarz Baby Food Processor and the Baby Chef Ultimate Baby Food Maker. This unit can be found generally from $150 - $230 with the Baby Chef version usually found to be slightly cheaper than the FAO version.

These food processors operate comparably to the Beaba Baby Cook, though it also can double as a bottle warmer as well. It has an 8 cup capacity, allowing you to make several meals at once then you can freeze for later.  A few users have noted that the rubber seal can be problematic, but overall the product has been well-reviewed.

Kaloric 5 IN 1 Baby Food Maker

The Kaloric model might appeal to parents looking for a cheaper option. Depending on where you buy it, the price ranges from about $80 -  $120. It also steams, purées, defrosts, and warms foods and bottles. It has the added function of also sterilizing pacifiers.

The downside is that the capacity is at least half of the Beaba and the FAO models, only able to make about 1 cup at a time.  User feedback isn't nearly as positive either, with common complaints that the steaming process is long and that the food doesn't grind down to a fine enough texture.

Baby Brezza One Step Baby Food Maker

The Baby Brezza sets itself a part from the other models in that it can function on a timer. Dump your food to be steamed in the container, set the timer, and it automatically steams and moves to puréeing without requiring further attention from you.

It also has a larger 2 1/2 cup capacity system, so making meals in larger batches is a snap. Fewer user reviews are available on this model, but what is available seems to indicate parents are pleased with this product.

The First Years Babypro All In One Baby Food Maker

The First Years Babypro All In One Baby Food Maker is the most affordable option on our list, available for purchase anywhere between $50-$75. It steams and purées but lacks the ability to defrost, heat prepared food or warm bottles. Reviews are mixed on the product. The main complaint seems to be if you are looking to prepare larger batches of food, it takes forever to steam them. However, most users who prepare single-serving meals review the Babypro Baby Food Maker quite well.
