Jane Cys is learning the tips and tricks of parenting and children the hard way -- raising four strong-willed children (two boys and two girls). From failed dinners to long, sleepless nights and the importance of household schedules to the best educational toys for boys (or girls), Jane has tried many different tactics and products when it comes to her kids, some of them succeeding famously and others quickly dropped as unworkable.

Experience

Jane has been a freelance writer for more than a decade, leaving her full-time job as a health policy reporter on Capitol Hill once her first son was born in 2001. A healthy skepticism and dogged persistence learned from interviewing too many politicians turned out to be handy skills when answering endless questions from four inquisitive children - or figuring out why certain products or parenting tips do or don't work for her in her role as a mom, chef, finance professional, chauffeur, house cleaner, clothes cleaner, gardner, mechanic, and professional decorator.

The knowledge learned on the job as a reporter on medicine and health policy also turned out to be immensely helpful when it came to handling numerous ear infections, a broken bone (or two), insurance companies and pediatricians. Jane also substitute teaches at a local preschool and runs the Chess Club at a local elementary school.

Education

Jane has a master's degree in public affairs reporting from University of Illinois-Springfield and a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.
