Dawn Stacey, PhD, LMHC, is a former writer for Verywell Family covering birth control and sexual health. She has over 15 years of counseling experience (both in person and online)—providing therapy on mental illness and sexual health issues, such as resolving guilt over birth control use to making informed reproductive choices. Dr. Stacey has helped individuals, couples, and families with mental health issues, relationship issues, sexual practices, family planning, and crisis management. She also taught college psychology courses at the University of Phoenix.
As a former Planned Parenthood employee, Dr. Stacey had the opportunity to provide counseling on adoption, prenatal care, abortion, and sex education. She also assisted clients in finding the right fit between their needs and their contraceptive method. Dr. Stacey participates in radio, television, internet, and print media interviews, provides lectures on mental health issues and birth control, and has held several contraception consultant positions.
Dr. Stacey is a licensed mental health counselor and earned a PhD in psychology in 2016 from Capella University. At the University of Florida in Gainesville, she completed her Specialist in Education and Master of Education in mental health counseling, as well as her Bachelor of Science in psychology.
I believe that all individuals should have the right to manage their fertility and have access to accurate contraception information. I understand the personal issues surrounding birth control use. Being mentored through Planned Parenthood, I have had the amazing opportunity to experience people's real-life struggles and joys in the area of reproductive health. As a contraception advocate, I would love to see everyone make safe sex choices. I understand your concerns and am so fortunate to have real-life experience—seeing, firsthand, how contraception and reproductive health decisions affect all of our lives.
I also love educating others about mental health issues. Unfortunately, there is a stigma surrounding mental health. It is essential that we break through this stigma and start having real conversations about mental illness. I have years of experience providing psychotherapy and teaching about psychology. We all have the right to be happy and should have access to mental health services.
