Verwell Family / Kevin Liang A good night’s sleep is essential for a happy, well-rested kid, and the right mattress can make a big difference. Whether your child is ready to transition from a toddler bed to a big-kid bed, or you’re just looking to upgrade their current mattress, you should pay attention to the type of mattress and materials it’s made from, how firm it is, and keep an eye on your budget. At the end of the day, what matters most is that your kid is comfortable and sleeping for the expert-recommended 10 to 14 hours a day—because when their sleep quality improves, usually the parent’s sleep quality does, too. When mattress shopping, a basic rule of thumb to remember is that a firmer mattress is ideal for toddlers and young children, per safe sleep guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). If you want a mattress they can use as they get older and move through these stages, we think a flippable or two-sided mattress may be the best option for you—and the most affordable in the long run. We spoke to pediatricians and child sleep experts about what matters most in a good mattress for children, and then we narrowed the field to 19 and sent them out to our editors to test at home with their own kids. Our kid testers ranged in age from a 16-month-old who used the mattress during nap time to school-age kids all the way up to an 18-year-old. Our editors and their kids have been sleeping on these mattresses for three months and taking note of the firmness, whether their sleep quality improved, and how comfortable and supported they felt as they slept. In order to name the best twin mattresses for kids and toddlers, our editors and their families continue to sleep on these mattresses so we can keep this list up to date with information on how they hold up over time. We found this Amazon-exclusive mattress to be soft (but not too soft), and were impressed by how it molds to the kid’s shape while they sleep but bounces back to its original shape in the morning. Both of the layers are made from breathable open-cell foam, but the cushier top layer cradles and conforms to their bodies, while the bottom layer is sturdier and more supportive. While testing, kids compared the mattress’ feel to a cloud and said they didn’t want to wake up and get out of bed. We noticed kids would sink a bit into this mattress while sleeping, and that they toss and turn less throughout the night. In terms of sleep quality, the kids testing this mattress fell asleep faster and more easily, and they slept in longer than they did on their previous mattresses. Since this is a softer mattress, it’s better suited to older school-aged kids and teenagers. If you’re shopping for a toddler or younger child, we recommend the Saatva Youth Mattress, which is dual-sided and has a firmer side better suited to young kids, or the LEESA Youth Mattress, our best firm pick. And because of that sinking-in sensation, this mattress isn’t a great choice for stomach sleepers. You’ll want to choose a firmer mattress if that’s their go-to sleep position. In addition to being comfortable and improving sleep quality, we also like that this mattress is Greenguard Gold- and CertiPUR-US-certified, meaning that third parties have determined it’s environmentally conscious and free of several harmful chemicals. While it didn’t have any noticeable smells when it arrived and didn’t need to air out (unlike the Purple Kid's Mattress, which took more than 10 days to lose its chemical smell), it did take about 24 hours to fully expand after taking it out of the box. In terms of value, we think the price of $349 is well worth it for an improvement in your child’s sleep. Tuft & Needle offers a 100-night sleep trial, so if your kiddo decides they don’t like their mattress after three months, you can return it free of charge. Plus, it’s backed by a 10-year limited warranty. Price at time of publication: $349 Key Specs:Construction Type: Foam | Firmness: Firm | Thickness: 6 inches or 8 inches | Sizes Available: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King | Warranty: 10 years Best for Older Kids Casper Sleep Original Hybrid Mattress 4.4 Amazon View On Amazon View On Nordstrom View On Wayfair Our Ratings Comfort 4/5 Support 4.5/5 Sleep Quality 4.5/5 Value 4.5/5 Pros Great for those who like softer mattresses Three zones contour to the body Breathable Cons Expensive If your kid prefers a softer mattress to a firm one, the Casper Sleep Original Hybrid Mattress is a cozy, breathable option. Thanks to thousands of perforations, the mattress has lots of airflow—something our kids definitely noticed during testing. One, in particular, said she hasn’t gotten hot at all since she started sleeping on this mattress three months ago. This is a hybrid mattress, meaning that it’s made with both foam and a traditional coil innerspring, as opposed to one or the other. It’s also divided into three layers: a top layer of polyfoam with thousands of perforations to keep the sleeper cool, a middle layer of zoned foam that contours to the body, and a solid layer of foam-encased springs as the base. When it came to comfort, we found that it was soft and really enveloped the kids’ bodies when they lay down on it. Like our best overall pick, however, it may be too soft for younger kids. After sleeping on it for three months now, we’ve noticed our kids’ sleep quality has improved—they’re tossing and turning less and sleeping through the night without waking up (especially those who used to wake up multiple times a night). With time, the mattress has gotten softer and plusher—which are seen as pluses, according to the kids sleeping on it. Depending on your child, this could be positive or negative, but we also noticed this mattress helped kids sleep until well into the late morning hours (another testament to their improved sleep quality!). Since this Casper mattress is a bed-in-a-box, the brand says it could take three to five hours to fully expand. Luckily, during our test, it reached its full 11-inch height within a matter of minutes. We also like that its polyurethane foam is CertiPUR-US-certified and does not contain ozone-depleting chemicals or phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. There’s no avoiding it: This mattress is expensive. If you do buy it for a younger kiddo, we recommend buying a waterproof mattress cover in case of nighttime accidents. Your child can test their Casper mattress out for 100 nights, and it has a 10-year limited warranty. Price at time of publication: $1,295 Key Specs:Construction Type: Springs, foam, and memory foam | Firmness: Medium | Thickness: 11 inches | Sizes Available: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King | Warranty: 10 years Best Double-Sided Saatva Youth Mattress 4.5 Saatva View On Saatva Our Ratings Comfort 4/5 Support 5/5 Sleep Quality 5/5 Value 4/5 Pros Grows with the child Water-resistant cover 365-day trial period Cons Too firm to be used as a guest bed for adults Mattresses are an investment, so we like that this one can grow with your child. Since the Saatva Youth Mattress is double-sided, it will last your family years to come: The firmer side, geared towards children ages 3 to 7 years old, is sturdy for their growing bodies. While it was a bit too firm for adults, it felt safe and supportive for little ones. The other side, designed for ages 8 to 12, is softer with lumbar support to keep kiddos well-rested during the pre-teen years. Helpfully, the age ranges are noted on the mattress to remind you which side is which, minimizing confusion. Kids slept deeper when using this mattress, and their parents reported hearing them move around less during the night. This is a hybrid mattress, featuring a five-zone layer of high-density foam and a dual-sided coil unit to balance comfort and support. We liked the organic cotton cover (which has lumbar support!) because of its water-resistant finish, meaning we didn’t worry about accidents staining the mattress. Plus, the foam is CertiPUR-US-certified, and the flame barrier is made from nontoxic natural thistle, which parents of younger kids, in particular, appreciated. Saatva offers white glove delivery, so the mattress doesn’t require any time to expand. It also doesn’t smell, which is a plus for sensitive kiddos or pregnant parents. Though it’s pricey, it has a long shelf life (and a lifetime warranty), and we felt confident that the mattress was solid enough to last through adolescence. Bonus: Your kiddo can try out this mattress for a full year, and Saatva will even come to your house and remove the mattress for free if you decide to return it. Though there are cheaper options on our list, this one is less costly than the other Saatva mattress that made our list, the Saatva Classic Mattress, which is not double-sided like this one. Price at time of publication: $795 Key Specs:Construction Type: Innerspring | Firmness: Has a soft side and a firm side | Thickness: 10 inches | Sizes Available: Twin, Twin XL, Full | Warranty: Lifetime Best Foam Siena Twin Memory Foam Mattress 4.9 Siena View On Sienasleep.com Our Ratings Comfort 5/5 Support 5/5 Sleep Quality 5/5 Value 5/5 Pros Multiple types of foam Non-slip lower cover keeps mattress in place Cons Child may sink into the mattress a bit Not only are foam mattresses soft, but they’re great for kids with allergies, according to our experts. This Siena twin mattress is made from memory foam, which helps resist mold and dust mites, and it’s just soft enough without being too squishy. Kids reported that they fell asleep faster and stayed asleep longer while sleeping on this mattress. One, in particular, noted that he woke up more refreshed and ready for the day ahead. It’s medium-firm, so it’s soft enough that kids sink in and feel cozy, but not so much that it’s uncomfortable. Topped with soft padding, the thick Siena Memory Foam Mattress is made of three different types of foam: adaptive memory foam that kids sink into just a bit, dense polyfoam that supports their bodies, and nearly half a foot of super solid foam for stability. There’s also a non-slip cover on the base of the mattress to keep it from shifting around. After three months of use, the foam retained its original shape and remained comfortable without any signs of wear and tear. Over the course of three months, this mattress (which arrived folded up in a box and took about 24 hours to expand) improved kids’ overall sleep quality. At $499, this CertiPUR-US-certified mattress is priced competitively with several of our other top choices, like the Nod by Tuft & Needle Twin Mattress. Siena offers a 180-night home trial so your kiddo can give it a test drive, and it’s backed by a 10-year warranty if you decide to keep it. Price at time of publication: $499 Key Specs:Construction Type: Foam, memory foam, and polyfoam | Firmness: Medium | Thickness: 10 inches | Sizes Available: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King | Warranty: 10 years Best Value Allswell 10-Inch Hybrid Mattress 4.8 Allswell View On Walmart View On Allswellhome.com Our Ratings Comfort 4.8/5 Support 5/5 Sleep Quality 4.5/5 Value 5/5 Pros Arrives in a box with wheels for easy transport Expands quickly Affordable price point Cons Child may sink into the mattress a bit Mattresses can be expensive and heavy to lug around, but the Allswell 10-Inch Hybrid Mattress is both budget- and user-friendly. It arrives folded in a box with clever wheels on it, making it easy to move into your kiddo’s bedroom before setting it up (it made for a fun family activity, too!). We like that this hybrid mattress’ combination of memory foam and coils made it comfortable to sleep on without sacrificing support. The top layer is quilted for added cushioning over a layer of charcoal- and copper gel-infused memory foam, which kept kids cool. Individually wrapped coils on the bottom of the mattress reduced motion disturbance—kids woke up less during the night from tossing and turning. It’s so soft, you sink into the mattress, but it still has a nice bounce to it. The Allswell made upgrading from a toddler bed smooth sailing for one of our kid testers, but it was a hit with kids who’ve slept on a twin mattress for years, too. It started to expand immediately after we opened the box and needed only a few hours to get to its full size, so it was ready to go by bedtime. At a reasonable $339, it’s a great pick for kiddos just transitioning into a big-kid bed and budget-minded families alike. It has a 100-day free trial and a 10-year warranty, and the brand offers 3-year or 10-year accident protection for a small additional fee. Price at time of publication: $339 Key Specs:Construction Type: Springs and memory foam | Firmness: Medium | Thickness: 10 inches | Sizes Available: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King | Warranty: 10 years Best Support Purple Kid's Mattress 4.7 Purple View On Amazon View On Purple Our Ratings Comfort 5/5 Support 5/5 Sleep Quality 5/5 Value 4/5 Pros Removable, machine-washable cover included Gel layer relieves pressure Cons Smells at first The Purple Kid's Mattress stands out because of the cooling gel grid, which contours to kids’ bodies to relieve pressure, helping them sleep better (even when they slept on a shoulder awkwardly). Adults who slept on the mattress with their sick kiddos agreed, finding that they felt comfortable during the night and well-rested the next day. Plus, over 1,000 air channels kept sleepers cool all night long. Underneath the gel grid are 5 inches of responsive foam that’s softer and lighter than the foam used in Purple’s adult mattresses, so it was supportive but not too firm for little bodies. Kids’ sleep quality improved after sleeping on this mattress, with some even needing to be woken up for school for the first time since they were so cozy. Overall, kids reported sleeping in more and waking up less in the middle of the night. When it arrived, we took the mattresses out of the zippered bag inside the box, which came with a handy box cutter (the only one in our test to do so!) for easy breakdown. It took less than 10 minutes to expand, though we did find that the mattress had a strong smell at first (which lingered for about two weeks), so we recommend letting it air out in another room for a bit before use. While the mattress is a bit pricey at $700, it does come with a few fun extras: an eye mask and two miniature mattresses that can be used as doll beds or fidget toys, which kids loved playing with. Plus, the zippered bag that the mattress comes in can be used for storage. We like that this mattress is Clean Air GOLD, meaning it’s made from low-emission materials, and is CertiPUR-US-certified. Plus, it has a 100-day free trial, a 10-year warranty, and can be returned for free. Price at time of publication: $700 Key Specs:Construction Type: Foam and GelFlex grid | Firmness: Soft | Thickness: 7 inches | Sizes Available: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King | Warranty: 10 years Best for Younger Kids Nest Puffin Memory Foam Kids Bed 4.7 Nest Bedding View On Nest Bedding Our Ratings Comfort 5/5 Support 5/5 Sleep Quality 5/5 Value 4/5 Pros Contours to the sleeper’s body Expands almost immediately Cons Shipping may take awhile Kids who like a plush yet solid mattress loved the Puffin Memory Foam Kids Mattress from Nest Bedding, which is soft without being too soft and conforms to kids’ bodies without any sinking. This mattress’ cushy feel was even compared to a sheep and a marshmallow. The cooling mattress cover has half an inch of polyfoam quilted into it that provides extra cushioning, then comes a layer of latex-free foam (great for kiddos with allergies!) that’s cozy yet responsive. There’s also a dense base of polyfoam that makes the mattress feel sturdy, and all of the foams are CertiPUR-US-certified. When we took the mattress out of the box it arrived in, we didn’t detect a smell, and it puffed up immediately after it was removed from the vacuum-sealed packaging (even quicker than the brand-recommended 12 to 24 hours), so it went on the bed frame that very same day. While Nest Bedding only offers a 30-day free trial (a shorter period than most of our other top picks, like the Siena Twin Mattress, which has a 180-night trial), it does come with a lifetime manufacturer’s warranty. You can also buy additional accident protection for three, five, or 10 years. Price at time of publication: $499 Key Specs:Construction Type: Foam | Firmness: Medium/firm | Thickness: 7 inches | Sizes Available: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King | Warranty: Lifetime Best Organic Naturepedic Verse Organic Kids' Mattress 4.6 Amazon View On Amazon View On Naturepedic.com Our Ratings Comfort 5/5 Support 5/5 Sleep Quality 4.5/5 Value 4/5 Pros Made from organic and non-GMO materials Encased coils add springiness Soft quilted top layer Cons Organic cotton smell may bother some kids Expensive For those looking for an organic, environmentally conscious innerspring mattress, we found that the Naturepedic Verse Organic Kids Mattress is not only eco-friendly but cushy and bouncy, too. Kids described the mattress as squishy and cloudlike, noting the comfort of the top quilted layer (made from cotton, wool batting, and plant-based synthetic fiber), which rests on top of an inch of cotton. They also liked the bounciness from the glueless encased coils on the bottom, noticing that they’ve tossed and turned less in their sleep over the course of the test. Initially, the mattress smells like organic cotton, which could be a plus or a minus based on your child’s preferences. We noticed that the smell faded over time and was undetectable after putting on a mattress protector. The mattress is made from organic materials that are safe for kiddos, such as organic cotton, organic wool batting, and synthetic fiber that’s made from GMO-free sugarcane. The materials have been rigorously tested to meet high standards for organic, nontoxic, and environmentally friendly materials (it’s GOTS-certified, Made Safe-certified, and UL/Greenguard-certified), and it’s made without fire retardants. While this mattress is pricier than other options (like ones from Nest and Nod by Tuft & Needle, which both retail for under $500), it’s a high-quality, supportive mattress that helped kids toss and turn less. We recommend it for families that are specifically in the market for an organic kids’ mattress and have the room in their budget. Naturepedic offers a 100-night free trial and a 25-year limited warranty. Price at time of publication: $999 Key Specs:Construction Type: Innerspring | Firmness: Firm | Thickness: 8 inches | Sizes Available: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen | Warranty: 25 years Best Cooling Zinus 8 Inch Cooling Essential Foam Mattress 4.5 Zinus View On Amazon Our Ratings Comfort 4/5 Support 4/5 Sleep Quality 5/5 Value 5/5 Pros Cooling effect Reasonable price point Cons Had a slight synthetic smell after unpackaging The Zinus 8-Inch Cooling Essential Foam Mattress truly lives up to its name: Kids that tend to run hot noticed that they weren’t waking up sweaty anymore after sleeping on this mattress. They also noticed a decrease in tossing and turning, so it reduced discomfort overall. There was a mild synthetic smell right when we took it out of the packaging, but after 24 hours, it aired out (and the mattress was fully expanded). The top layer is made from a softer foam that contours to kids’ bodies, relieving pressure, while the base layer is firmer to support the mattress’ overall structure (and all the foam is CertiPUR-US certified, too). The top of the mattress feels soft to the touch thanks to the cooling cover, which has a nice quilted appearance and feel. Though one toddler parent added a waterproof mattress protector in case of accidents, a mattress protector isn’t necessary for comfort purposes, since it’s soft enough by itself, particularly for side sleepers. We’re impressed by the affordable price of $160, which is especially nice if you have a younger kiddo who’s prone to accidents. We also think this mattress will work for grown-up guests, as adults and kids alike slept well on it. While there’s no free trial period (understandable for the price), this mattress does have a 10-year limited warranty. Price at time of publication: $160 Key Specs:Construction Type: Foam | Firmness: Firm | Thickness: 5 inches, 6 inches, or 8 inches | Sizes Available: Twin, Full, Queen, King | Warranty: 10 years Best Delivery Saatva Classic Mattress 4.2 Saatva View On Saatva Our Ratings Comfort 4.7/5 Support 5/5 Sleep Quality 4/5 Value 5/5 Unboxing 5/5 Pros White glove delivery Multiple firmness options available Lifetime guarantee Cons Expensive If you’re looking for easy, coordinated delivery, we recommend the Saatva Classic Mattress. The brand’s white glove service delivered the mattress directly into kids’ bedrooms, and since it’s not a bed-in-a-box, we didn’t have to wait for it to expand at all. We particularly appreciate that Saatva called to coordinate the delivery a few days prior and texted us updates on the day of delivery, which is helpful for planning around busy schedules. We tested the Saatva Classic Mattress in its medium level, Luxury Firm, which isn’t too plush or too firm—just right for many kids. It was firm enough that sleepers don’t sink too far into it, which we appreciate, as a plush mattress could pose a suffocation risk for toddlers. The mattress’ pillow top has lumbar zone quilting, which provides additional support for kids’ lower backs and spines. To further reinforce the middle of the mattress, the second layer has a wire that keeps the spine in alignment and high-density memory foam to relieve pressure points. One layer of recycled steel coils contours to the body and is surrounded by foam padding, making it easier to get in and out of bed, and a layer of sturdy tempered steel coils provides structure. The outside of the mattress has a hypoallergenic organic cotton cover that’s undergone an antimicrobial treatment, so it’s great for kiddos with allergies. Though it costs nearly $1,000, we find that the Saatva Classic Mattress is a worthy investment, especially since it has a lifetime warranty and a year-long trial period. After the initial testing period, testers felt confident that the mattress would last for a long time, and since it’s not a kid-specific mattress, it can work in a guest bedroom, too. Price at time of publication: $995 Key Specs:Construction Type: Pillow top and springs | Firmness: Soft, medium, or firm | Thickness: 11.5 inches or 14.5 inches | Sizes Available: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King, Split King, Split California King | Warranty: Lifetime Best for Side Sleepers 5 Little Monkeys The Sleep System 4.4 5 Little Monkeys View On 5littlemonkeysbed.com Our Ratings Comfort 4.5/5 Support 4.5/5 Sleep Quality 4.2/5 Value 4.2/5 Pros Kid-size pillow and waterproof mattress protector included Foam layers cradle sleepers Temperature-regulating gel Cons Pricey Your little monkeys will enjoy jumping and sleeping on this pillowy soft bed. (Note to kids: This is not an endorsement for jumping on beds!) Made from multiple layers of memory foam, the mattress cradles the sleeper’s body, which is ideal for side sleepers and helps reduce tossing and turning. Plus, kids who had been struggling to sleep through the night slept longer and deeper on this mattress. The dense open-cell memory foam that tops this mattress is CertiPUR-US-certified and provides the right amount of comfort and firmness, according to kids. (One compared the balance between support and comfort to Baby Bear: “just right.”) This mattress is also infused with temperature-regulating gel, which helps kiddos stay cool during the night. The mattress took around two hours to fully expand out of the box and plastic wrap, and while we did notice a faint scent at first, it smelled new and clean. You also get a lot for your money: It comes with several extras, including a stain- and water-resistant mattress cover made from super soft jersey-knit organic cotton, a pillow that’s specifically designed for children, and a stuffed monkey. While The Sleep System from 5 Little Monkeys is on the pricier side, we think it’s worth it based on side sleepers’ glowing feedback and the included machine-washable mattress protector and kid-sized pillow. The mattress has a 15-year warranty. Price at time of publication: $749 Key Specs:Construction Type: Memory foam | Firmness: Not listed | Thickness: 8 inches | Sizes Available: Twin, Full, Queen | Warranty: 15 years Best Budget Linenspa 8-Inch Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress 4.3 Amazon View On Amazon View On Wayfair View On Linenspa.com Our Ratings Comfort 4.5/5 Support 3.9/5 Sleep Quality 4.5/5 Value 5/5 Pros Affordable price point Bed platform add-on available Cons May be too bouncy for some For families operating on a budget, the Linenspa 8-Inch Memory Foam and Innerspring Hybrid Mattress is affordable without compromising on comfort or support. Kids said it was comfy yet bouncy (due to the inner coils, which they could feel slightly), and while every child is different, toddlers were fans of the bounce. Aside from its bounciness, we liked that the medium-firm mattress was plush and supportive, thanks to the top layer of quilted memory foam, the middle layer of comfort foam, and the firm tempered steel coils at the base. Over the course of the test, kids have noticed improvements in their sleep quality and less tossing and turning, and the mattress itself hasn’t lost its shape or firmness, even after several months of use. The bed-in-a-box expanded quickly and didn’t smell at all after we removed it from the box and the plastic wrapping. While the mattress is available for purchase by itself, we opted for the mattress and bed platform combo, which was easy to use: The platform requires no assembly, as you simply push two buttons on each end and unfold it. Mattresses can be expensive, and many families might not be ready to make a big investment—particularly if their child is just getting used to a big-kid bed. At $130 for the mattress ($195 with the platform included), this has an excellent value, which is backed by a 10-year warranty. It has a firmer side for younger kiddos (ages 3 to 7), which is made from dense, high-grade polyfoam that kids found quite sturdy, while the other side is softer and squishier, and kids loved falling into bed with that side up. Though there were no drastic changes in kids’ sleep quality, they noted that their bodies felt more relaxed when laying on this mattress. Since this is a hybrid mattress, there are 6 inches of individually wrapped coils (with edge support) between the foam layers, which reduce motion transfer and help kids relax. Overall, kids slept deeply on this mattress and woke up feeling more refreshed, according to their parents. This mattress was easy to set up, expanding within an hour after we took it out of the box it came in, so kiddos were able to sleep on it that night. Plus, there was no chemical smell and it wasn’t too heavy or bulky to move around. Caregivers can rest easy knowing that this mattress is safe to sleep on: The breathable mattress cover is hypoallergenic, the foam is CertiPUR-certified, and the mattress itself is free of lead and phthalates. Additionally, the cover is treated with a water-repellent finish and has an antimicrobial shield to ensure the mattress stays clean and healthy for your kiddo. There are also fire retardant layers between the coils and the foam. Kids emphasized that when the softer side is up, this mattress really is quite soft, so if your older kiddo prefers a firmer mattress (this one’s firmer side is meant for younger kids), you may want to consider other options, like the LEESA Youth Mattress. With this purchase, you get a 100-night free trial and a limited 10-year warranty. While it’s quite firm, kids said this mattress is super supportive, likening it to lying on sand. They did note that it feels a little too hard to lie on at first, but they adjusted quickly and even sunk in a bit (in a comfortable way), so the mattress has some give. It comes tightly bundled in the box, but impressively, it bounced into shape immediately. Even with multiple position changes, kids didn’t wake up much at night, if at all, while using this mattress. The memory foam top layer is cooling and cradles the body while remaining firm, and the middle layer of aerated foam relieves pressure on the joints. There’s also a base layer of thick foam for sturdiness, and the mattress is encased in a green-gray cover with an attractive herringbone texture. As additional safety measures, each mattress undergoes lead and anti-tip testing. Overall, we are impressed by the quality of the firm, supportive, and good-looking Leesa Youth Mattress, which has a 10-year warranty. At $549 for the twin size, it falls in the middle of our list’s price range. Your kid can test the Greenguard Gold and CertiPUR-US-certified mattress out for 100 nights. Twin Mattresses for Kids We Also Tested Nectar Sleep Mattress: We found this memory foam mattress to be too hard and firm to sleep on comfortably. The mattress took a long time to adjust to kids’ bodies, and once it did, they felt too sunk in. While it may work for still sleepers that like a very firm mattress, it may not be best for those who tend to toss and turn. Avocado Green Mattress: This mattress is comfortable and springy, but it is heavy, has a bit of a scent, and at $1,399, it’s too expensive for a child’s mattress. Zinus 8-Inch Green Tea Pressure Relieving Mattress: We did not find any glaring issues with this mattress, but it didn’t wow us. We do appreciate its affordable price of $152 (at time of publication), though. How We Tested Twin Mattresses for Kids Over the course of a month, 13 editors and their children assessed 19 mattresses in their homes. The kids’ ages ranged from 16 months old to 18 years old, with their responses communicated to and recorded by their parents and guardians, who also provided their own insights. Additionally, we spoke with Alanna McGinn, CEO and sleep expert of Good Night Sleep Site, about what to look for when choosing a comfortable, supportive mattress for your growing kid. We unpacked the mattresses and let them expand, if necessary. We then introduced the mattresses to our children, who slept on them for four weeks before we rated them on comfort, support, sleep quality, and value, noting whether the child slept through the night, woke up feeling refreshed, and more. The kids have continued to sleep on these mattresses since, and we’re updating this story as we learn more. What to Look for in a Twin Mattress for Kids and Toddlers Construction There are three primary types of mattresses on the market, each with its own benefits and drawbacks. When reviewing your options, it’s helpful to understand these common mattress types. Foam: Whether they're infused with gel or regular memory foam, foam mattresses are great at holding in motion to reduce tossing and turning and aren't as noisy as a mattress with coils. Typically feeling anywhere from soft to medium, memory foam can be “a better choice if your child suffers from asthma or allergies,” McGinn says since it tends to resist mold and dust mites. While they “have great contour for your child’s body,” these mattresses may not be supportive enough for certain sleep positions or children and can hold more body heat,” according to McGinn. She recommends them for stomach sleepers.Innerspring: This traditional type of mattress contains coils that contract when holding weight. Innerspring mattresses provide support—specifically for the back—and are often more budget-friendly than other options. They also have “more of a bounce and may promote a cooler sleep,” McGinn notes. Keep in mind that the coils can wear over time, creating a squeaking noise, and the mattress may need to be replaced sooner.Hybrid: A hybrid mattress is essentially a combination of foam and innerspring mattresses, as the materials include both foam and coils. For many sleepers, this can strike an ideal balance between softness and support. McGinn recommends a hybrid mattress or an innerspring mattress for back sleepers who need “support on their hips and trunk.” It’s important to note that hybrid mattresses are often more expensive than other options. Firmness Consider what firmness your child needs to get a full, restful night of sleep. When selecting the mattress, make sure it’s designed to support their spine and bones, as you want a mattress that evolves with their growing body, says McGinn, adding, “It’s best to plan for growth spurts and your child’s height as the years go on.” Mattresses come in various levels of firmness, but you will commonly see them described as soft, medium, or firm. Soft: A soft mattress can make you feel as if you're in the bed rather than on the top of a mattress, similar to a sinking feeling. Soft mattresses may contain foam inside for extra softness, feel best for those who sleep on their side, and are better for older children instead of younger ones.Medium: Medium-firm mattresses are a combination of soft and firm and are “a great choice for a growing child,” McGinn says, as they “can provide the right amount of support as they move and switch positions during the night.” The top layers typically consist of a softer material, like memory foam, while the bottom half may have coils for better support.Firm: Firm mattresses are best for young children, like babies and toddlers, because they are supposed to sleep on a hard, firm surface. When a younger child lies down on a mattress, there should be no indentations. Material One of the most important features to look for in a twin mattress for kids is the material, especially if your child has allergies of any kind. Not all mattresses are made from organic fabrics and fillers; some are hypoallergenic while others aren’t, and only some have waterproof casings to protect the inside materials. Some memory foam mattresses may contain harmful ingredients, McGinn tells Verywell Family. “Memory foam mattresses are made of synthetic materials that can release volatile organic compounds,” she says. “This can cause allergic reactions and skin irritations. If you are considering hypoallergenic [mattresses], focus on natural latex, cotton, or bamboo. This will create a more breathable space and avoid toxic chemicals.” When making your purchase, look for certain certifications, such as CertiPUR-US, GOTS, GOLS, Made Safe, and UL/Greenguard, which indicate that the mattress has passed specific environmental or safety tests. McGinn also notes that you may notice an odor when unpacking a mattress. “Off-gassing is common when bringing the mattress home,” she says. “It’s best to open and unpack your mattress in a room with good airflow.” Frequently Asked Questions What is a twin mattress? Sometimes referred to as a single mattress, a twin mattress usually measures 38 x 75 inches. In terms of sizing, it falls between a toddler bed and a full (or double) bed. A twin mattress is a great option when your kid is new to a big-kid bed or doesn’t have enough space in their bedroom to accommodate a full. What kind of mattress is best for kids? The best mattress for your kid depends on a few factors. Generally, a medium-firm mattress is a safe bet since it provides the right level of reinforcement for your kiddo as they shift between sleeping positions. However, a firmer surface is recommended for younger kids to help support their growing bodies, as well as for younger toddlers to reduce suffocation risks. Older kids may prefer a softer mattress, particularly if they’re sleeping in frequently. What is the cost of a twin mattress? Prices vary wildly across the mattress industry. We've found that you can get a good mattress for kids for less than $200, but mattresses with more specialized materials, such as organic fibers and memory foam, tend to cost more. If you're buying a mattress to grow with your kid into early adulthood, you may spend up to $1,500. Should I get a twin or full-size bed for a toddler? Either size is safe for your toddler, so it’s a matter of preference and space. They may adjust to a twin-size bed a little quicker because it’s closer in size to their crib or toddler-size mattress, but they will eventually adjust to a full-size bed just as well.
