Homeschool Spanish Academy (HSA) is an accredited online institution that has a standardized curriculum designed specifically for each age group. Certified Guatemalan teachers, who receive full employee benefits, teach students from age 5 up to adults. All materials (lessons, homework, quizzes, exams) are created by HSA directly and provided for free to students. The online system also makes it easy to keep track of the syllabus and current grades, and provides a report card.

The preschool Spanish program for ages 5 to 6 covers the foundation of pronunciation, greetings, basic conversation, numbers, colors, objects, and pictures. The scheduling system allows a lot of flexibility and you also have one full year to use the classes that you purchase. Classes are offered Monday through Friday, plus Saturday mornings (limited availability), and students have the option to schedule classes on the same days and times each week.

This program would be a good option for high school students preparing for college admissions or those looking for supplementary study aids for their current language courses (but students as young as 8 years old are welcome).

Despite being completely free, Duolingo still has enough structure, organization, and content to allow users of any age to start learning Spanish. With five levels in each skill, you get lessons (available on the app and online) that are easy to follow.

Lessons are sequential. First, kids learn a number of words, with images, text, and audio. From there, they proceed to building sentences and learning new words in that context. They can check whether their work is correct and if it isn’t, Duolingo will give them a correction and an explanation so they can better understand the lesson. All in all, multiple exercises build listening, writing, reading, and speaking skills.

Some exercises, like matching pairs of words, can feel repetitive. However, studies show that repetition is a key factor in new language acquisition. A study commissioned by Duolingo showed that an average of 34 hours of Duolingo lessons equates to a full university semester of language education.

Duolingo is free with ads. The paid version, Super Duolingo, is $13 if you pay month-to-month, or $7 per month for a year. Super Duolingo removes all ads, gives you unlimited passes that allow you to always continue your lessons, offers personalized lessons to practice your mistakes, and gives you unlimited attempts to win legendary challenges. There is also an annual Family Plan option that allows two to six people to use Duolingo ad-free for $10 per month.

Italki has nearly 3,000 Spanish tutors available for one-on-one tutoring through its site and offers a wide range of prices that can fit any budget. 

Over 1,000 tutors are certified professionals and around 2,000 are community tutors who are native speakers. Professional teachers must either have certification from an accredited institution, a degree in teaching Spanish as a foreign language, a national or state teaching license, or previous work experience at a language teaching institution. These standards ensure that professional teachers are able to build a proper curriculum with resources and materials. Community tutors, on the other hand, are native speakers who help build conversational skills.

Teachers and tutors determine the lesson prices on their own. They also decide whether to offer students a free trial or discounted lesson.
