Getting a good night’s sleep during pregnancy may be easier said than done. That’s why having a comfortable pair of maternity pajamas that will grow with you through every trimester is so important. The best maternity pajamas will cradle your bump, be made from comfortable and breathable materials, and even accommodate nighttime nursing or feedback after you’ve given birth.

The Kindred Bravely Davy Pajama Set is attractive, affordable, and works through every season. If you prefer a nightgown style and have a larger chest, we like the JJ Winks Room Service Maxi Nightgown.

The right pair of maternity pajamas for you will depend on your lifestyle, budget, and climate, not to mention whether you sleep hot or cold while pregnant. Above all, you should choose something that will keep you comfortable. And, according to Jennifer Lombardi, birth and postpartum doula, if it’s cute and makes you feel good, that’s even better. We spoke with doulas about how to find a well-fitting and comfy set of maternity pajamas and evaluated sets from top brands for sizing, materials, comfort, nursing-friendly design, and price.

Here are the best maternity pajamas available today.

Best Overall: Kindred Bravely Davy Pajama Set

4.8
Kindred Bravely Davy Pajama Set

Kindred Bravely

Pros
  • Award winning

  • Convertible nursing top

  • Pockets on pants

Cons
  • Limited color options

This set of pajamas from Kindred Bravely is our best overall because they’ll be comfortable for sleeping at every stage of pregnancy (and beyond) and are available up to a size XXL. A ruched, double-layer top will support your chest even at its most engorged and makes middle-of-the-night feedings easy. Plus, the wide waistband is comfortable and gentle.

Hard-to-find pajama pockets are awesome for holding a phone, pacifier, or anything else. We like that they don’t necessarily look like pajamas, though, so if you end up wearing them out to get the mail or run some errands, we doubt anyone will notice. And since Kindred Bravely always offers free returns, it’s easy to try a few sizes and find the right fit.

Best Nightgown: JJ Winks Room Service Maxi Nightgown

Pros
  • Bust support

  • Stylish

  • Size and color options

Cons
  • Expensive

Attractive and stylish, this nightgown is not maternity specific, but it’s so long and flowy that we think it’s a good choice with room for a growing bump (and one you’ll be able to keep wearing long after you give birth). Besides being super soft and attractive, this flattering neckline and unique back straps offer plenty of bust support.

We especially like the way this nightgown provides a soft elastic shelf that supports your breasts without being too tight. Adjustable straps mean you can get the exact support you need, and strategic shirring in the front provides additional coverage. You’ll look stylish and stay comfortable in this maxi nightgown.

Best Sleepshirt: belabumbum Starry Night Sleepshirt

Starry Night Sleepshirt

belabumbum

Pros
  • Button down for easy nursing access

  • Center pleat gives room for belly

  • Matching family PJs available

Cons
  • Mother of pearl buttons may be uncomfortable to sleep against

Made of super soft Peruvian cotton, this long-sleeve sleep shirt is comfy and attractive. Designed for growing bodies, the size-inclusive option is a smart postpartum choice since the button-down front makes it easy for nursing access. Your growing belly will appreciate the center pleat that allows the sleep shirt to expand with you and still provide some flattering shape. And if you like the Starry Night pattern, it’s easy to create some photo-worthy family matching options with men’s and baby pajamas that coordinate with the pattern.

Best Shorts Set: Ekouaer Women Maternity Nursing Pajama Set

Ekouaer Women Maternity Nursing Pajama Set

Amazon

Pros
  • Affordable

  • Multiple patterns

  • Size inclusive

Cons
  • Runs big

If you love a matched pajama set with shorts when you’re not pregnant, we think you can’t go wrong with this set from Ekouaer. Instead of a panel or fold-over band, we like that these shorts feature an adjustable elastic waistband, so you can get the perfect fit at every stage of your pregnancy. The ruched tank top is attractive and provides easy and discreet breastfeeding access when the baby arrives.

Best for the Hospital: Motherhood Maternity 3-in-1 Labor Delivery and Nursing Gown

Motherhood Maternity 3-in-1 Labor Delivery and Nursing Gown

Source: Motherhood Maternity

Pros
  • Back and front snaps

  • Waist slits for IV access

  • Shoulder snaps for skin-to-skin

Cons
  • Only one color option

A true labor and delivery gown, this option is so thoughtfully constructed. There are lots of features in this comfy gown that will make your hospital stay so much easier. The dress features back and front snaps to easily access fetal monitors or an epidural. Waist slits make IV access a breeze, and shoulder snaps enable the gown to open up for breastfeeding or skin-to-skin contact.

Doula Jennifer Lombardi likes options that are “accessible to opening in the front. Whether you are nursing, pumping, or bottle feeding, this allows you to do skin-to-skin with your baby, which is super important.”

  • Great for the hospital

  • Gender neutral baby blanket matches the robe and nightgown

  • Free shipping and returns

Cons
  • Expensive

  • Only one color option

While we like this as a maternity nightgown to keep you sleeping comfy throughout your pregnancy, where it really shines is in the hospital and postpartum phase. Add this three-piece set (which includes a nightgown, robe, and baby blanket) to your hospital bag, and you’ll be picture-perfect for photo sessions with your bundle of joy. Beyond the special time in the hospital, all three pieces are useful and can be worn around the house for weeks to come.

Best for Winter: Seraphine Bamboo Lounge Pajamas

Black Bamboo Lounge Maternity Pajamas

Seraphine

Pros
  • Moisture wicking fabric

  • Hypo allergenic

  • Two piece set

Cons
  • Only two color options

Perfect for the chilly winter months (or if you just run cold), this two-piece set will keep you warm and cozy but is made to prevent overheating. Thanks to its bamboo fabric, this long-sleeve, long-pants set is naturally hypoallergenic and will wick moisture and regulate your body temperature. A crossover V-neck allows for easy breastfeeding access, and the low-rise elastic waist pants are made to fit under the belly bump.

Best for Summer: Izzy and Liv Island Empress Satin Cami + Shorts 2-Piece Set

Island Empress Satin Cami + Shorts 2-Piece Set

Izzy and Liv

Pros
  • Wide size range

  • The shorts have pockets

Cons
  • Hand wash recommended

Warm weather plus pregnancy can be a recipe for feeling super hot—especially at night. Avoid becoming overheated with this cute, but not too skimpy, pajama set. Designed and sold by a Black and woman-owned business, the pattern truly pops on this stylish set.

We like that these pajamas go up to a size 3XL, and the cami’s adjustable straps make it a cinch to get a great fit. Busy folks will love that the shorts feature pajama pockets. The only drawback is it’s made of polyester satin and should be hand washed, but given the material, they should dry quickly.

Best Organic: Pact Maternity Nightgown

How We Selected

While we have shopped for plenty of maternity pajamas throughout our own pregnancies, we spoke with a doula about the most important features of a pair of maternity pajamas and researched dozens of sets from the top brands. We looked specifically at brands that offered a variety of styles and sizes, affordable prices, and comfortable pajamas that are long-lasting. Other factors included the doula’s professional pajama recommendations, shipping and return policies, and affordability.

What to Look for in Maternity Pajamas

Fabric/Material

"This isn’t the time to try a new material you haven’t worn before,” Lombardi tells us, recommending “cotton, bamboo material (it’s an anti-microbial), and linen. The goal is to be comfortable and avoid any skin reactions. As usual, it’s best to wash new pajamas in your regular detergent prior to wearing."

Sizing

Use the size chart on a retailer’s website to determine your sizing. With most maternity clothes, base your fit on your pre-pregnancy size.

Postpartum Comfort

Focus on loose clothing that won’t restrict your body. If you are recovering from a C-section, take extra care around your scar and avoid waistbands or anything uncomfortable until you are healed.

Budget

As with most clothing, there’s a huge range of price points for maternity pajamas. If you’re having a baby shower, adding in some splurge-worthy robes or pajamas is a great way to get what you want and while your guests get to celebrate you!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do you need maternity pajamas?

You definitely don’t need maternity pajamas. If you find your regular pajamas are getting very tight, it’s time to find another option that won’t restrict your growing body. Choose what works for you, whether that’s an old T-shirt and big boxers, a night shirt, or a matching set.

  • What should I wear immediately after delivery?

Jennifer Lombardi, a birth and postpartum doula, recommends “a great robe, or something that allows an opening in the front. Loose or short sleeves allow for easy access to your body for the nurses or doctors, but also give you that easy access to nurse or practice skin to skin.”

  • How much do maternity pajamas cost?

Depending on the brand, materials, and type of pajamas (e.g., a set versus a nightgown), you can expect to spend between approximately $20-$100. Our best overall choice from Kindred Bravely is made of breathable cotton to fit comfortably through pregnancy and beyond—and it's on the lower end of that price range at $50.

Why Trust Verywell Family

Maya Polton is a former marketing manager and current freelance writer who covers food, home, and parenting. She’s also the mom of a 12-year-old son, 9-year-old son, and 5-year old daughter. Maya loves comfortable pajamas and finds that pockets in pajamas, while somewhat rare, are oh so helpful. When each of her children was born, she was so thankful she had an attractive and soft robe packed in her bag so she could slip it on when any visitors were there. Her love of robes runs deep since she has a robe for each season (and a few others, too)!
