The 10 Best Maternity Jeans of 2022

Verywell Family / Chloe Jeong

The past few years of sweatpants dominance combined with your now-growing belly may mean that it's been a while since you thought of jeans as your go-to pants. But we're here to tell you that jeans are a maternity wardrobe staple; modern and comfortable, they go with everything.

New Jersey-based stylist Julie Holobinko says if you haven't worn denim in a while, it's best to keep it simple. One full-length pair of jeans and one cropped style, such as capris, can last you your whole pregnancy.

As you start your search for the best maternity jeans to wear, you'll have to decide if you want to relax in the stretch of jeggings or another style. Denim styles have changed significantly over the past few years. A straight-leg jean with a more rigid denim looks more modern, Holobinko says. However, the best maternity jeans fit your style and make you feel confident. With this guidance in mind, we researched more than 30 options on the market. When reviewing products, we carefully considered lifestyle, size range, material, washing instructions, and overall value.

An obstetrician-gynecologist on our Review Board also reviewed this article for medical accuracy and integrity surrounding what to look for in maternity jeans, how they should fit, and how far into your pregnancy you can start wearing them.

This relaxed silhouette looks like a modern mom jean, and it's available in two washes. Whether you want to hide or show off your bump, the over-the-belly panel is soft, supportive, and designed not to slip down. How We Selected

While we have shopped for our own maternity jeans, we have also researched the best places to shop for maternity jeans online right now. We aimed for sites that offered a variety of styles and sizes, affordable prices, and comfortable clothes that pregnant women want to wear. Other factors included shipping and return policies, size inclusivity, and user reviews (and complaints).

We also consulted with New Jersey-based stylist Julie Holobinko to help find brands that live up to their promises of quality, accurate sizing, and customer service.

What to Look For When Buying Maternity Jeans

Style

Pregnancy is probably not a time to stray from the norm, stylist Julie Holobinko tells us. "Women should look for maternity denim that looks similar to styles they wear not pregnant. Start with one or two styles that are pretty basic, so you can get a good bit of wear out of them during your pregnancy."

Fit

Use the size guide on each retailer's website. "Start with your pre-pregnancy size. The best way to get a good fit is to try on a variety of sizes and styles," says Holobinko. Some sizing is based on pre-pregnancy waist measurement, while others are a more general sizing. This will vary by brand and style, so read the details before any purchase.

Denim Wash

There are so many options of denim colors. Pick what appeals to you and your style. From a stylist's perspective, Holobinko tells us, "Denim washes on the darker side with no distressing are the most neutral/versatile."

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What week do I start wearing maternity jeans?

Everyone makes the switch from regular pants to maternity pants at different times. Some find that their clothes are way too tight right away and need to switch to sweatpants or yoga pants as early as six or eight weeks. Some don't really "pop" until about 12 weeks, which is when the uterus has expanded beyond the pelvic area. Still, others don't really need to wear clothes with a more flexible waistline until about 20 weeks in, when the abdomen begins to significantly expand.

When shopping for new jeans, consider waiting until at least the second trimester (12 weeks). The changes your body goes through in the first trimester don't usually involve your growing bump, so it might be hard to gauge what size you need until you are further along. You can use the rubber-band trick (loop around the button hole and attach to the button) to give yourself a little extra room in the waist early on in pregnancy.

That said, some people find that wearing jeans even just a few weeks into pregnancy is super uncomfortable. So if having a good pair of comfortable jeans is important to you, purchase a pair of maternity jeans early on.

  • What jeans can I wear while I'm pregnant?

While some people can rock non-pregnancy jeans halfway into pregnancy or even longer, most find that non-maternity jeans start to become too tight and constrictive as early as a few weeks into pregnancy. Even though your belly hasn't popped yet, you may still experience gas, bloating, and cramping.

So you could need to purchase a few pairs of maternity jeans at some point during your pregnancy. Luckily, there are many styles of maternity jeans to choose from, so you can find jeans that fit your style and budget, and that feel great.

  • What type of maternity pants are the best?

There are so many brands that make maternity pants that it's easy to feel overwhelmed as you try to pick out the perfect pair. There isn't really a "best" pair of maternity pants, though—it's more about the best maternity pants for you.

Everyone's body changes in different ways during pregnancy. Some people are "all belly" and don't gain significant weight in their thighs and butts; others expand all over. You might want a pair of jeans that is more supportive of your growing belly. Or, you might want a pair made with stretchier, more breathable material overall.

Your budget, lifestyle, and style sensibilities will also dictate what the best pair of maternity pants is for you.
