Verywell Family / Jhett Thompson Whether you're running to the store or hopping on a plane, parents and caregivers will appreciate the hands-free comfort of using diaper bag backpacks. These stylish bags often feature several pockets for both baby and adult belongings and may include a unique changing station or stroller straps for the ultimate on-the-go convenience. (This makes a diaper bag backpack a great addition to a baby registry.) To find the best diaper bag backpacks, we first put 30 of them through multiple tests at the Verywell Testing Lab in New York City. Then, we sent our favorites home with our editors, who have been using them for two months now, and we've updated this article to reflect their additional insights. We loaded up the backpacks with their baby essentials, like diapers, pacifiers, wipes, and bottles, then took note of the number and design of the pockets to assess organization and convenience. In the lab, we put the bags on our backs and took them for a spin to evaluate how comfortable they are to carry, and in the real world, our editors took the bags along for walks and outings with their babies. We also made sure to note if we could access our necessities one-handed since you'll often have a baby in the other arm. Our editors are still testing these backpacks at home, so we'll continue to update this article as we learn more. In addition to consulting pediatricians prior to testing and writing this article, we had a pediatrician from our Review Board review this article for accuracy regarding how backpacks compare to other diaper bag styles and how to find the right one for your family. While it's tempting to fill your diaper bag backpack with every baby care item, "less is more," since an overloaded bag can cause muscle straps and make traveling with a little one trickier, our experts say. So, consider a diaper bag backpack with a generous size to fit everything you need, like diapers, wipes, or your own items, without weighing you down. The bag should feel comfortable to wear without sacrificing your style. Additional considerations include a changing station or pad, wet bag, easy-to-use zippers, pockets (insulated and uninsulated), easy access, size, and overall value. We considered these criteria when testing them in our lab and at home, then narrowed down our list to 18 winners. Thanks to its stylish design, you’d never know that the diaper bag backpack is made from 100% recycled fabrics (polyester, specifically). According to our tester, the changing backpack featured many interior and exterior pockets, some detachable, with plenty of room to store diaper bag necessities like diapers, bottles, wipes, clothes, and more. And none of those items fell out or got scrambled when our tester tilted the bag. When the diaper bag was full, it made the fit tight yet still comfortable. There was also a 17-inch laptop compartment that easily fit our tester’s laptop without feeling heavy, earning the backpack 5 out of 5 stars for its 4-gallon capacity. The bag’s comfort category passed with flying colors, too. “This bag felt so comfortable, even with my laptop in it. It felt really light,” the tester said, adding that the backpack distributed weight evenly. Our tester loved the “sleek” design of the diaper bag backpack and scored it another 5 out of 5 stars in that category. While the contents inside the backpack are accessible via the top fabric fastener, like the included detachable changing pad, the front zipper was the ultimate highlight feature, allowing easier access to everything inside. Plus, the bag is rainproof on the exterior with waterproof zippers, while the interior is spill-proof to protect from accidents. As for hiccups in the bag’s design, our tester found only one: The outside bottle holder is narrow and will not fit large water bottles (only regular-sized). Despite a small bump, the diaper bag backpack fit in the basket of a big jogging stroller and a smaller umbrella stroller during lab testing. The Bugaboo Changing Backpack works best with Bugaboo strollers, but thanks to separate velcro straps that attach to the stroller’s handles, our tester could attach it to an Uppababy stroller. However, it’s important to note that if your baby isn’t in the stroller, or if the backpack is full, the bag's weight will tip the stroller over. Testing Notes: “I could sort of reach things through the top opening, but the game changer was the front zipper, which let me take out the diaper, a bottle, and the changing pad, super easily.” The Bugaboo Changing Backpack isn’t the most budget-friendly diaper bag backpack option (4.5 out of 5 stars for overall value). Still, it’s stylish and comfortable, provides plenty of space for necessities, and has features parents and caregivers will appreciate, like the front zipper and waterproof material. “For the price, you're getting comfort and also a pretty good laptop bag you could use—even when you're not with your kid,” said our tester, adding that the bag looks well-made and durable. Price at time of publication: $160Key Specs:Dimensions: 12.75 (W) x 6.5 (D) x 17.75 (H), 17 inches (laptop pocket) | Material: Recycled polyester | Weight when empty: 2.7 pounds | Cleaning instructions: Wipe clean with damp cloth Verywell Family / Tamara Staples Best Canvas JuJuBe Zealous Backpack 4.9 Amazon View On Amazon View On Jujube.com Our Ratings Capacity 5/5 Design 4.5/5 Comfort 5/5 Value 5/5 Pros Spacious exterior pockets Lightweight when fully loaded Stylish, versatile look Cons Tends to flop forward The Jujube Zealous Backpack gives our top pick a run for its money, impressing us in the lab and in our editors' homes. With over a dozen pattern and color options available, like electric blue or dotted diamonds, there’s no shortage of stylish options. After more than two months of testing, at home, we're still impressed by its compact yet spacious build, which fits everything you need for a day out with a baby (like the included changing mat) without making the bag bulky or heavy. We've found the front pouch to be particularly useful for organizing our necessities, and we appreciate the four mesh inner pockets for easy visibility and access to our belongings, too: There's enough room in this backpack to store a parent's essentials in addition to baby gear. Even with the two bottle pockets filled, this diaper bag backpack is relatively lightweight when fully loaded, and when we tilted the bag upside down, the contents didn’t get too jumbled or fall out. The backpack easily fits into the gracious storage compartment of a Graco stroller and a smaller Uppababy cargo compartment (with a little effort on the caregiver's end). And when it comes to comfort, the padded, adjustable straps make for a pleasant ride, even when the bag is loaded all the way up. After months of testing in our own homes, we do wish this bag had more structure; it tends to flop forward, so you may need to use one hand just to prop it up while accessing your belongings. Considering the bag’s comfort, compact design, and loads of storage space, we think the $130 price tag is worth it. Perhaps best of all, thanks to its stylish look, you can use it as a backpack long after your kiddo is out of diapers, so it has long-term value. It's also machine washable—a priceless feature for any parent or caregiver—though it's easy to spot clean as well. The diaper bag is spacious and easily fits everything that littles need for an overnight or weekend stay, which is why our tester scored 5 out of 5 stars in the capacity category. Two exterior and five interior pockets (some with zippers) kept items organized, while a sizable insulated compartment provided a spot for bottles or food to stay cool. This is an important and very useful feature for anyone planning on being away from home with a bottle-fed baby or a toddler. One of the pockets was accessible from the back of the bag, though our tester noted that not all the bag’s zippers could be unzipped one-handed. Additionally, our tester had to struggle to fit the fully loaded diaper bag into the storage compartment on a small stroller in the lab. There were no problems with the diaper bag fitting into the larger storage space of a second stroller. The bag's exterior is 100% polyurethane vegan leather that looked “professional” and “high-end,” according to our tester. The bag's interior features PVC-free lining that’s safe to wipe clean if spillage occurs. A changing pad with a zippered pocket is included for on-the-go diaper changes to hold wipes, diapers, or cream. The backpack's design nearly got a perfect score, but it lost half a point because our tester wished for a larger interior pocket or additional side pocket. The bag also comes with a key holder deep inside the bag, making it difficult to access. Wide padded straps allowed the bag to distribute weight evenly when the backpack was fully loaded. According to our tester, it didn’t feel heavy and earned 5 out of 5 stars for comfort. “Very comfy to wear and walk around with,” they said, adding that nothing fell out of the bag or got moved out of place when tilted. Testing Notes: “I could see a parent using this as a work bag. You could keep your snacks cold with the front pocket and retire the changing pad when it’s no longer needed.” Our tester scored the diaper bag backpack’s overall value 5 out of 5 stars. The many pockets (particularly the insulated one) and comfy padded straps are only a few standout features our tester loved about this backpack. If you’re looking for more sparkle than the solid black color option, the same diaper bag backpack is available in a stunning champagne shade. Price at time of publication: $150 Key Specs:Dimensions: 15.75 (L) x 4.72(W) x 18.11 (H) inches | Material: Polyurethane (exterior), polyester (lining) | Weight when empty: 2.8 pounds | Cleaning instructions: Use damp cloth to spot clean Verywell Family / Tamara Staples Best Insulated Pocket Babymoov Diaper Bag Sancy Backpack 4.8 Nordstrom View On Amazon View On Nordstrom View On Maisonette.com Our Ratings Capacity 4/5 Design 5/5 Comfort 5/5 Value 5/5 Pros Cooler compartment Padded shoulder straps distributed weight evenly Vibrant color and stylish design Cons Water bottle pockets don't fit larger bottles This diaper bag backpack resembles a large lunch bag—and it even functions like one, too. On the exterior backside of the bag is an easily accessible zippered cooler compartment that many will find indispensable for keeping bottles and food cold. (It can even double as a wet bag for a damp swimsuit or diapers.) On the downside, when this pocket is full, it takes up space from the main compartment, making it challenging to put additional items in the bottom half of the bag, However, we found that the bag's adjustable buckle closure helps us stuff extra belongings in more easily than a traditional zippered bag. The bag's design is impressive with its vibrant color, stylish shape, buckle closure, and sturdy zippers. We can reach into the bag pretty easily while still holding it on one shoulder strap, and it fits into both small and large stroller cargo compartments. A front zipper pocket features a removable waterproof changing pad and compartments for wipes, creams, and a few diapers, minimizing the need to go digging when you’ve got a wiggling baby in need of a change. In addition, there are a couple of interior pockets for bottles and small items, like a wallet. We also loved the included tiny pouch to keep pacifiers clean and within arm’s reach. We do wish that there were an easily accessible outer pocket for a caregiver's phone and keys. One odd detail is that instead of external side pockets, there are two elastic bands to hold a water bottle. It worked until we put the bag into a stroller’s storage compartment, when the bottle fell out. Plus, we've discovered that only slimmer bottles can fit into these straps—a standard Nalgene won't work. The bag is nice to carry and distributes weight evenly, and the padded straps are a useful touch. We've been able to wipe off any messes with no issues, too, and the bag is less than $100—a great price for a functional diaper bag backpack with a convenient insulated pocket. Price at time of publication: $90Key Specs:Dimensions: 12.6 (W) x 7.7 (D) x 17.7 (H) inches | Material: Polyester | Weight when empty: 2.6 pounds | Cleaning instructions: Spot or wipe clean Verywell Family / Tamara Staples Best for Long-Term Use Herschel Settlement Sprout Backpack 4.8 Amazon View On Amazon View On Nordstrom View On Bed Bath & Beyond Our Ratings Capacity 5/5 Design 4.5/5 Comfort 4.5/5 Value 5/5 Pros High quality Includes a divider Generous capacity Cons Needs more internal pockets For a bag you can continue to use after your little one graduates from diapers, the Herschel Supply Co. Settlement Sprout Backpack is your go-to. While the bag doesn’t come with a wet bag for dirty cloth diapers, it includes an easy-to-clean changing mat with two mesh side pockets and a velcro piece storage divider to create a 13-inch padded laptop compartment. “The fact that the middle part can be attached or detached would give you many options for how it's used,” said our tester. It has a healthy capacity to store all items (nearly 7 gallons!) and received 5 out of 5 stars for that category. Plus, it fit into both strollers’ cargo areas in the lab. Some effort was required on the smaller stroller, however. On the bag's exterior, our tester found three pockets and used one to hold her water bottle. When our tester tilted the bag, everything stayed in place, including the bottles in the interior mesh pockets. However, there weren’t many pockets inside for organization, so our tester knocked half a point off for the bag’s design. Additionally, the zippers on the bag were hard to operate one-handed. However, the backpack's external zipper was a highlight that allowed quick access to the changing mat. Our tester had zero complaints about the bag’s comfort but scored it 4.5 out of 5 stars for lacking any wow factor. Still, at $100, this diaper bag backpack is high-quality and versatile, and we think it could last through multiple babies or be used as a regular backpack later on. Price at time of publication: $90Key Specs:Dimensions: 17.75 (H) x 12.25 (W) x 5.75 (D) | Material: Polyester | Weight when empty: 2.1 pounds | Cleaning instructions: Hand wash Verywell Family / Tamara Staples Best Easy Access Bag Nation Diaper Bag Backpack 4.7 Amazon View On Amazon View On Mybagnation.com Our Ratings Capacity 4.6/5 Design 4.8/5 Comfort 5/5 Value 4.5/5 Pros Minimalistic design Comfortable to wear Lots of pockets Cons Looks like a diaper bag The Bag Nation Diaper Bag Backpack prioritizes convenience with a large compartment at its center and several internal and external pockets (14 to be exact) for diapers, wipes, and other baby essentials. “Because there's just one large compartment, it's easy to figure out where everything is,” our tester noticed, scoring the bag’s capacity 4.6 out of 5 stars. When flipped and tilted, everything stayed in its spot and didn’t dislodge from pockets. It also fits nicely in the storage compartments of two different strollers we used in the lab. Our tester said he enjoyed the “minimalistic design” of the diaper bag and the neutral charcoal color. The “well-thought pocket placements” for diapers, bottles, wipes, and other items (like the included large changing mat and toiletry bag) were a big hit and earned the diaper backpack 4.8 stars out of 5. The padding on the shoulder straps provided a comfortable wearing experience and distributed weight evenly. “Everything feels centered and aligned,” our tester said, giving the bag’s comfort a perfect score. The price may be too much for some, but with so many pockets, including an insulated one for bottles, a comfortable fit, and plenty of space, it’s a bag that many will find worth the money. Price at time of publication: $120Key Specs:Dimensions: 13.3 (L) x 8.3 (W) x 16.8 (H) inches | Material: Polyester twill | Weight when empty: 3 pounds | Cleaning instructions: Wipe with wet cloth Verywell Family / Tamara Staples Best Organization Ruvalino Diaper Bag Backpack 4.7 Amazon View On Amazon Our Ratings Capacity 5/5 Design 4.8/5 Comfort 4.5/5 Value 4.5/5 Pros Several adjustable compartments Comfortable fit Items remain in place when jostled Cons Backpack material a tad scratchy According to our tester, this backpack was like an accordion with its many storage compartments, including pockets for a laptop, wipes, and more. “There are five different sections that can be zipped and unzipped to separate different compartments of the backpack,” our tester said. “Within each of those zipper compartments, there are several different pockets.” The front compartment has two insulated pockets for wide-neck or tall baby bottles. While the compartments are handy for storing items, our tester found it tough to access everything with one hand while still holding the bag—as one might do while juggling a cranky baby needing a change. Despite that minor concern, the backpack earned 5 out of 5 stars for its capacity. Our tester was able to fit diapers, wipes, and other items without it becoming too heavy or disorganized. One downside is that it didn’t fit in the smaller stroller’s storage space and jostled the baby doll strapped inside during the testing process. While we like the overall design and functionality of the Ruvalino Diaper Bag Backpack, one small flaw is that it lacks a wide enough base to stand on its own when empty (though it’s sturdy when full). Moreover, our tester wished the zippers stopped higher for easier access to open the bag. Still, the bag’s design kept everything organized without having to stuff everything on top of each other and later digging to find items lost at the bottom. Padded shoulder straps with soft fabric provide a comfortable fit, although our tester noticed the polyester material of the backpack was a bit scratchy against the skin and may not be ideal when wearing a tank top. But, “overall, no digging, and the weight is evenly distributed,” the tester added, scoring comfort 4.5 out of 5 stars. Testing Notes: “Because of the various pockets and separate compartments, this backpack was able to fit a lot without getting too heavy or disorganized. It was super seamless to fit everything I needed.” For those who love organization, this diaper bag backpack is a dream come true—and worth the $90 cost. “This is a really fair price for what you're getting! It's not the most convenient to zip and unzip or access with one hand, but aside from that, it's a nicely designed bag,” said our tester. Price at time of publication: $90Key Specs:Dimensions: 11.8 (L) x 7.8 (W) x 16.5 (H) inches | Material: Polyester | Weight when empty: 1.9 pounds | Cleaning instructions: Spot clean or hand wash cold and dry flat Verywell Family / Tamara Staples Best Wipes Pocket TWELVElittle Peek-A-Boo Backpack 4.7 Nordstrom View On Amazon View On Nordstrom View On Buybuy BABY Our Ratings Capacity 5/5 Design 4.5/5 Comfort 4.5/5 Value 4.8/5 Pros Room to spare when fully loaded Plenty of pockets for storage Easy to zip/unzip Cons Straps difficult to adjust The Twelve Little Peek-a-Boo Backpack impressed us with its stylish look and many pockets, including a unique wipes pocket on the front of the bag. Simply lift the magnetic front flap, and pull wipes out through the slot opening. Once your kiddo graduates from diapers, you can adjust the divider's position to turn it into a regular pocket for your own stuff. In addition to that magical pocket, there are two external side pockets insulated for baby bottles or water bottles. Another insulated pocket and four regular pockets hold items on the inside. According to our tester, everything fit inside the diaper bag backpack with room to spare, including her own fairly heavy Hydroflask water bottle. “There is a dedicated slot for everything I need to put in it, and there's a lot of room in the main cargo left over for a wet bag, extra toys, [or] a pair of baby shoes,” said our tester, scoring the bag’s capacity 5 out of 5 stars. Plus, everything stayed put when the bag was tilted and flipped, though you’ll want to keep an eye on any bottles in the open interior pockets. A convenient back pocket converts to a travel sleeve for a luggage handle to make on-the-go adventures effortless. We also appreciate the machine-washable diaper pad and clear wipe pouch for parents and caregivers who don’t want to carry a large wipe package. Perhaps because of all these spacious features, the backpack was tough to fit into our larger stroller’s storage compartment and required both hands to get it out. A better storage choice would be to use the included straps to hang it from a stroller’s handle bar. A thoughtful detail like that is what kept this bag at a healthy 4.5 out of 5 stars for design. The diaper bag backpack’s straps feature the same padded vegan leather material that felt good on our tester’s back even when loaded with gear. Our tester ran into an issue when adjusting the straps, which she called “a pain and not intuitive to adjust. When shortened, parts of the straps dangled pretty far, which is annoying.” Our tester noted that the fabric is not breathable, but it didn’t bother her (something to keep in mind for parents and caregivers who run hot) and earned another 4.5-star rating for comfort. According to our tester, the diaper bag backpack nearly earned a perfect score for overall value. Considering the vegan leather material, spacious storage, and special wipes pocket, our tester thought the price of the diaper bag was fair. “It looks really nice and could pass as a regular backpack,” she said. Price at time of publication: $179Key Specs:Dimensions: 12.5 (L) x 15 (H) x 5.6 (D) | Material: Vegan leather | Weight when empty: 3.5 pounds | Cleaning instructions: Spot clean recommended, dry clean only when necessary Verywell Family / Tamara Staples The 7 Best Baby Wipes of 2023 Best Compact Itzy Ritzy Mini Diaper Bag Backpack 4.6 Target View On Amazon View On Walmart View On Bed Bath & Beyond Our Ratings Capacity 5/5 Design 5/5 Comfort 4.5/5 Durability 5/5 Value 5/5 Pros Fits essentials despite small size Front opens wide for easy access Comes in several stylish colors and prints Cons Tight squeeze for big baby bottles No padded straps We get it—sometimes a large diaper bag is a lot to shuffle to daycare, the store, and other places, which is why the Itzy Ritzy Mini Diaper Bag’s compact design is worth celebrating. This mini backpack has eight pockets (four internal and four external) that fit everything a little one would need for a day. However, according to our tester, it was a tight squeeze for two baby bottles into the external side pockets, adding width to the bag and resulting in a struggle to store in both strollers’ storage compartments. Additionally, two pockets on the interior didn’t fit the bigger bottles we had in the lab, though they could fit smaller bottles. Our tester said the bag was great as a one-day bag but likely wouldn’t hold everything you’d need for an overnight stay or weekend trip, and scored the bag’s capacity (and snug fit) 4.5 out of 5 stars. A compact diaper bag backpack doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style. The Itzy Ritzy is available in several color and pattern options, like leopard and taupe, and includes a matching changing pad (not padded). Our tester liked how the front of the bag opened wide for easy access and visibility and said that all zippers were easy to zip and unzip one-handed. The bag’s rubber feet kept the bag sturdy and upright at all times. However, the interior pockets were small and didn’t provide much flexibility on how you use them, which knocked off half a point for the bag’s design. Comfort earned the same 4.5 score, with our tester saying the bag was a little less comfortable than other diaper bag backpacks with padded straps. Despite some hiccups during testing, the compact diaper bag backpack earned 5 out of 5 stars for its value. Price at time of publication: $90Key Specs:Dimensions: 11.5 (L) x 7.5 (W) x 13.75 (H) inches | Material: Polyurethane (exterior) and polyester (lining) | Weight when empty: 2 pounds | Cleaning instructions: Spot clean with damp cloth Verywell Family / Tamara Staples Best Parents’ Pockets JuJuBe Be Right Back Travel Backpack 4.6 Target View On Amazon View On Buybuy BABY View On Bed Bath & Beyond Our Ratings Capacity 4.5/5 Design 4.8/5 Comfort 5/5 Value 4/5 Pros Loads of functional pockets Well made Machine washable Cons No wipe dispenser pocket Parents and caregivers have needs too! This diaper bag backpack has several useful compartments for grown-ups’ goodies, as well as their kids’. Inside a large front exterior pocket, you'll find several additional pockets to hold a cell phone, wallet, keys, and glasses (with an attached case that doubles as a microfiber cleaning cloth). All items easily fit into the backpack’s additional pockets on the exterior and several internal compartments (4.5 out of 5 stars for capacity). Our tester said she could reach into the bag while still wearing it to reach the included changing pad and had no issues unzipping the bag one-handed. “This is a very attractive bag. It doesn't look very fancy or leather, but it looks like a quality bag with nice metal details and good construction,” our tester said, giving it 4.8 stars for design. She liked that parents’ and caregivers’ needs were a top priority, though she noted that the bag doesn’t include any clever baby-related features, like a wipe dispenser. As for comfort, this diaper bag backpack scored perfectly. The mesh back and easy-to-adjust padded straps provided an even weight distribution for our tester, who wore the fully loaded diaper bag backpack on a quick walk. However, she says that while the bag fit her body well, she’s unsure how it would compare to parents and caregivers of a larger size. The $175 price is a splurge for many families, so the bag earned 4 out of 5 stars for its overall value. However, for families who want to splurge, our tester said the Jujube Be Right Back Backpack is well-made, easy to use, and stylish without looking childish. Plus, it fits easily into an umbrella stroller’s cargo space without bothering the baby. This diaper bag backpack is machine washable, which is a big benefit. The bag includes a diaper caddy insert with four pockets and labels for easy organization and access for diaper changes (but no changing mat or wet bag). In addition, our tester noted that there were “lots and lots” of interior and exterior pockets, adding that everything fits in the bag effortlessly, keeping items organized (5 out of 5 stars for capacity) without spilling out when rolled around. And velcro straps on each side allowed the bag to attach to stroller handles—a handy feature for on-the-go families. Finally, despite issues with adjusting the padded straps, you can wear the bag crossbody or backpack-style without sacrificing comfort (or the straps falling off). “The padded straps are so comfortable,” said our tester, scoring the bag’s comfort 5 out of 5 stars. We appreciated the thoughtfulness of this bag’s design—5 stars! The zippers are easy to use, and there is plenty of space—and then some—for everything. According to our tester, the bag is a great option for traveling families.Testing Notes: “Lots and lots of pockets! Love it. More pockets than I needed for this test. I think this would really help parents stay organized.” The bag’s overall value lost a point due to the price of $318. This is the most expensive diaper bag backpack on our list, yet there is so much else to love about it. Our tester said this was their favorite diaper bag to test in the lab, because it “really does just about everything.” Price at time of publication: $318Key Specs:Dimensions: 12 (L) x 5 (W) x 12.25 (H) inches | Material: Nylon | Weight when empty: 2.5 pounds | Cleaning instructions: Not listed Verywell Family / Tamara Staples Best With Diaper Caddy 7am Enfant London Backpack 4.3 Nordstrom View On Walmart View On 7amenfant.com View On Bloomingdales Our Ratings Capacity 5/5 Design 4.5/5 Comfort 4/5 Value 4/5 Pros Removable diaper caddy with pockets Comfortable as a backpack Sleek patent look Cons Bag was heavy when carried by top handles Stroller straps don't work The removable diaper and bottle caddy that comes with the 7AM Enfant London Diaper Bag is a convenient feature that parents and caregivers will appreciate. Instead of reaching for diaper-changing or feeding items individually, you can pull out the caddy for a faster diaper change with everything you need. According to our tester, this diaper bag backpack had zero problems fitting diapers, baby clothes, bottles, wipes, and more, especially if you’re strategic about how you place your items. In addition, the diaper bag backpack fits snugly into a stroller’s storage compartment when fully loaded, and nothing has fallen out when we've tilted the bag. The backpack has two sturdy handles to be held like a handbag; however, our editors have found that the bag feels heavy this way and prefer using the backpack straps, which distribute the weight more evenly for maximum comfort. Though we were excited it has velcro straps to attach it to a stroller, the minute we attached a loaded bag to a stroller, the backpack fell to the floor. While we're disappointed by the ineffective stroller straps, we do appreciate that this bag is water-repellent and looks really chic. It also has separate pockets (both interior and exterior) for additional items, like a laptop, a kids’ tablet, or the included changing mat. We also love the suitcase sleeve on the back for convenient travel. While the bag could improve its straps, it is a good value for all the features you get in return: The caddy is super useful, and the bag itself is machine washable. The $110 price tag could work in various budgets, making a great gift for expecting parents, caregivers, or families who travel often. Before it was fully loaded, the bag weighed less than 2 pounds, so it remains comfortable even with extra pounds full of baby things. Our tester thought its capacity was deceptively large without feeling bulky and scored it 4.6 out of 5 stars. Even when packed, the backpack fits into both the small and large strollers’ storage spaces without pushing the baby forward. The padded lining on the straps also provides a solid fit without weighing our tester down or feeling uncomfortable (4.5 out of 5 stars for comfort). The bag’s design is eye-catching. “This bag has both a nice and sophisticated design. I loved the neutral colors and the paint-splatter pattern,” she said. Additionally, several internal and external compartments held necessities and kept everything, including water bottles, in place when our tester tipped the bag over. However, the lack of zippered compartments inside resulted in a point loss for design. The thin, lightly padded straps are comfortable to wear, our tester said, scoring comfort 4.5 out of 5 stars. “I think it definitely helps that the bag itself is lightweight,” she said. Testing Notes: “It’s functional, organized, design-forward, and gender-neutral.” While the diaper bag backpack costs $159, our tester said it’s worth the investment for its quality and functionality (4.3 out of 5 stars for overall value). Price at time of publication: $159Key Specs:Dimensions: 11.8 (W) x 6.7 (D) x 15.4 (H) inches | Material: Faux nubuck | Weight when empty: 1.9 pounds | Cleaning instructions: Clean with damp cloth and mild detergent Verywell Family / Tamara Staples Best With Changing Station Baby Brezza Dante Changing Station Diaper Bag 4.3 Target View On Amazon View On Babylist.com Our Ratings Capacity 5/5 Design 4/5 Comfort 5/5 Value 3/5 Pros Drop-down changing station Lots of room Padded back and straps were comfortable Cons Items jostled due to leftover space The Baby Brezza Dante has one innovative detail that many diaper changers will love. When you unzip the back of the bag, a removable padded changing pad drops down for you to place your baby on for diaper changes anywhere. The drop-down changing station is “the most unique aspect” of this bag, but it’s not large, so you might not use it as your baby gets bigger. But overall, it sets the bag apart from others we tested. There are also 13 pockets total (two insulated and many zippered) in this bag. However, because our tester didn’t need to use them all, some loose items jostled after our tester tilted the bag. Our tester appreciated the bag’s large size. “It has space for everything a baby could possibly need and space for parents’ items, too,” she said, scoring capacity 5 out of 5 stars. The diaper bag also felt comfortable to wear without digging into the skin, thanks to the padded back and shoulder straps that were easy to adjust (another perfect score for comfort).Testing Notes: “The drop-down changing pad is pretty unique. I've never seen that before, and I could see how that could be particularly helpful where there is no other changing surface available.” This backpack’s price is somewhere in the middle of our list—not too high, yet not budget-friendly for all families. It might not be a practical option for those who need to access items quickly. Although, for the amount of space you get, this is a pretty good value. Price at time of publication: $100Key Specs:Dimensions: 14 (W) x 16 (H) x 7 (D) inches | Material: Polyester | Weight when empty: 2.8 pounds | Cleaning instructions: Spot or wipe clean Verywell Family / Tamara Staples Best for Travel Béis Ultimate Diaper Backpack 4.3 Béis View On Beistravel.com Our Ratings Capacity 4.5/5 Design 4.5/5 Comfort 4/5 Value 4/5 Pros Pockets for everything imaginable Drop-down changing station Includes fanny pack Cons Too large for some A functional diaper bag backpack for families on the go is an absolute must-have. The Bèis Ultimate Diaper Bag Backpack features a lot of special pockets, like one for wipes and baby bottles, and includes a drop-down changing station with more pockets. With all this room, our tester had zero problems putting items into the bag but ran into issues with things moving around when the bag wasn’t full. Our tester thought the bag’s design was almost too big and could pose a problem for parents and caregivers looking for an item. “I was looking for something, and I had to take everything out of the main compartment to find it,” she said, scoring it 4.5 out of 5 stars for capacity. Moreover, it was difficult to reach items in the bag one-handed (zippers were accessible with one hand, though) due to its large size, and it felt heavy when loaded. Because of this issue, the comfort category lost a full point. One of our favorite features was the removable fanny pack, which a caregiver can use when they want to leave the heavier bag behind. The drop-down changing station was another of our tester’s favorite features, but she noted that babies might outgrow it quickly. Nevertheless, the bag's design earned a healthy 4.5 out of 5 stars. The amount of space was both a pro and con to our tester and played a role in its overall value score (4 stars). “The problem is, you may wind up buying a second bag for when you don’t need to take this much with you,” she noted. Considering the amount of storage space and bells and whistles that come with this diaper bag backpack, it could be quite useful for a parent who is packing for overnight trips or a day out with multiple kids. It includes a changing pad, three insulated pockets for baby bottles, an outer water bottle pocket our tester described as “generous” for parents and caregivers, a designated wipes pocket, and more compartments (17 total). While the pockets didn’t fit the big baby bottles in testing, they easily held smaller ones. The front pockets were accessible while wearing the bag—even with one hand. All items fit beautifully into the bag, but our tester found one drawback: access. The main compartment of the bag is accessible only from the top, which can lead to items becoming lost at the bottom. While it was a tighter squeeze to fit the bag into the smaller stroller’s cargo area, the bag fit “no problem” in the larger stroller. Due to the lack of easy access to items, our tester scored its design 3.5 out of 5 stars. “It could just use a few more conveniences for access,” she noted. She enjoyed the button on the outer diagonal pocket and the easy-to-clean waterproof material, however. The bag also attaches to strollers with included straps. Additionally, the padding on the straps distributes weight well, minus a bit of discomfort around the shoulders for our tester (4.5 stars for comfort). While the HapTim diaper bag doesn’t look “luxurious,” the price is better than most of the others on this list. It’s still a stylish, neutral diaper bag with plenty of space to hold your little one’s necessities (and your own). It has 12 pockets (six internal, six external) and fits plenty of items, like a paci, wipes, diapers, diaper cream, baby bottle, and more. Once it was fully loaded with those essentials, our tester said a changing mat (not included) or wet bag (not included) could fit on top, but she wasn’t confident about both fitting (4 stars for capacity). The opening of the backpack resembles a half-moon shape that unzips entirely so you can reach items inside one-handed. Our tester loved the polyurethane material and said it was nice to the touch and looked “upscale.” The bag stands up on its own and features removable straps that can convert to a crossbody style. Moreover, our tester was surprised to find the backpack so comfortable due to the lack of padded shoulder straps (4.5 stars for comfort). Testing Notes: “It made me have such good posture walking around! The straps were surprisingly comfy for not being padded.” Our tester scored the overall value of the bag, including its $190 price tag, at 4.2 stars. She felt that it could be more spacious inside, but she also appreciated its many features, style, and comfort. In addition to several external and internal pockets (11 total), the baby backpack includes a washable zipper bag, a wipeable changing mat, and a removable pouch for small items. When fully loaded, the diaper bag backpack fits nicely into a stroller’s storage compartment but requires a bit of jostling to remove. When our tester made the bag fall over, nothing got too displaced inside. But despite many pockets providing a snug fit for items—including an easy-to-reach pocket for one editor's kid's Epipen—this isn't the most spacious bag out there. (We recommend the Honest City backpack for a super capacious option.) While some editors felt that their belongings all piled on top of each other, even when sorted, we did find that this bag proves itself during travel. The bag also stands on its own when fully loaded, and it has convenient stroller loops. We took it on vacation, and it got crammed under airplane seats, smushed by strollers in the trunk, and dragged to the beach—and it still looks brand new. The bag's design is sporty yet chic, and the neoprene material is soft to the touch and looks high-quality. And as a bonus, you can get extra room when you undo the buckles near the top zipper. Comfort is the highlight of this diaper bag backpack, largely due to the padded fabric and "cloud-like" straps. It feels nice to wear when it's full, the weight distributes evenly, and the puffy fabric is cozy against the skin. Though this bag is another high-priced backpack on our list, there’s still a lot to celebrate, like the removable changing pad and many pockets. For the comfort, size, and added features, it can be worth the price (and you may even use it for yourself later thanks to the versatile look). How We Tested the Diaper Bag Backpacks To find the best diaper bag backpacks, we first evaluated 30 diaper bag backpacks in the Verywell Lab in New York City, assessing each on capacity, design, comfort, and overall value, then sent our favorites home with our editors to use for several months. Our editors arrived on site at the Lab with their keys, phones, water bottles, and wallets to place inside the bags. Additionally, we provided two strollers on site (to test the diaper bags in the storage compartments) and baby items (diapers, wipes, diaper cream, blanket, change of clothes, snack cup, a toy, and baby bottle) to fit inside the backpacks. First, we weighed the diaper bag backpacks with the provided scale in the lab, then loaded up the diaper bags with all items provided. To assess their capacity, we unzipped and zipped the compartments, noting all the pockets, compartments, and special features, and observed whether the diaper bags stood on their own, both full and empty. Additionally, we inspected the seams and fabric to determine whether the material and construction were well-made to last for years. We even tilted and flipped the diaper bags over to determine whether items fell out or got so jostled that they’d be frustrating to find, especially with a crying baby in one arm. Then, we adjusted the straps and wore the diaper bag backpacks on a brisk walk to determine comfort. While holding a baby doll in one arm, we tried to take out the diapers, wipes, and changing pad with one hand, if possible. We also loaded the bags into the cargo compartment of two strollers—one large and one small—to assess their travel convenience. (For bags with stroller straps, we attached them to the handlebar to evaluate their effectiveness.) Finally, we carefully considered all other attributes in comparison with the price of each stroller to assess their overall value. 0:28 Testing Diaper Bag Backpacks for Features, Capacity, and Material Next, we sent our top picks home with our editors to test with their babies, asking them to complete similar steps to evaluate the same qualities, like capacity, ease of use, durability, and design, over time. Since spills are inevitable with a little one, we also asked them to note how easy the bags are to clean. This article has been updated with their insights from two months of use, and we'll update it again at six months if we notice any changes in quality or durability. In addition, we consulted with Whitney Casares, MD, MPH, pediatrician, author of “The Working Mom Blueprint,” and founder of Modern Mommy Doc, for guidance on properly wearing a diaper bag backpack and product recommendations. What to Look for in a Diaper Bag Size and Capacity Size is essential when finding the right diaper bag backpack for your family. First, consider how many children you’re caring for while using the bag, to ensure that you have enough space to fit everything. You should have pockets to hold different items, including baby bottles that need insulation to stay warm or cool. If you plan on taking the bag on longer trips, you’ll want a diaper bag with a large capacity, such as the Bèis Ultimate Diaper Bag Backpack, that may also serve as a carry-on when traveling by plane. However, if you only need to leave the house for short periods of time, you can opt for a smaller diaper bag, like the Itzy Ritzy Mini Diaper Bag. Dr. Casares recommends lightening the load to reduce strain on yourself, regardless of size. “Make sure to think ‘minimalism’ when you think about packing your baby's diaper bag, no matter what style you choose,” she suggests. Special Features When shopping for a diaper backpack, carefully examine the diaper bag's interior for special features like mesh pouches, extra pockets, hidden storage, or a drop-down changing station. Those things might be useful for your life on the go, or they might not be. Some diaper bag backpacks feature a zipper in the front for easily access to everything inside. Overall, what features you’ll find handy daily is up to you. Style While style isn’t the most important factor to look for in a diaper bag, it is one that many parents and caregivers consider. Because you will be carrying around the diaper bag for quite some time, its look may be important to you. Certain styles are easier on the back than others, such as a backpack over a crossbody. “Generally speaking, backpack diaper bag styles are easier on the body than totes or crossbody styles because they more evenly distribute weight across the shoulders and on the back,” said Dr. Casares. Material Diaper bags are made of many different materials, such as polyester or faux leather, which vary in look and weight. Some of them are even different shapes, like circles or squares. A diaper bag that is machine washable or wipes down easily is always a good choice, but at the end of the day, this is a bag you’ll be carrying a lot, so consider how it fits your personal aesthetic. Frequently Asked Questions What’s the difference between a diaper bag and a diaper bag backpack? A diaper bag backpack is essentially a backpack that holds items for little ones and adults, like a changing pad and a laptop. They often feature many pockets, allow you to travel hands-free, and distribute weight evenly across the body. Some have special clips or straps to hang them off of a stroller.Aside from a backpack design, diaper bags are available in other styles, like crossbody, tote, or fanny pack. These styles still feature special pockets but range in size and how they carry. For example, holding a tote diaper bag on your arm may become tiring after a while, and a fanny pack style is great for quick trips but lacks storage.“When you're picking a diaper bag backpack, make sure it doesn't cause any strain on your back, or any skin irritation from rubbing. Padded straps and a pack that's designed to fit ergonomically can help with this,” Dr. Casares tells Verywell Family. You simply want to make sure there’s room to fit everything you need to carry, especially if you have multiple children with different needs. Can I use my diaper bag as a backpack? It depends. Some diaper bags come with adapter straps that can turn them into backpacks, and some do not. Some diaper backpacks come with a single strap so you can use them as diaper bags and wear them over only one shoulder or crossbody. If your diaper bag has two handles and zips closed, you can turn it into a diaper backpack in a pinch by zipping the bag shut and looping one strap over each shoulder. What can I expect to pay for a diaper bag backpack? Diaper bag backpacks vary in cost, depending on size and style. On our list, prices range from $60 (HapTim Large Baby Diaper Bag Backpack) to $318 (Caraa Baby Nylon Bag). Generally, you can expect to pay between $40 and $180 unless you prefer to splurge beyond that cost. Pricier backpacks might be made from a more high-quality material, while less-expensive options might not have as many features.
